Music Lessons

I have had students who were 3 years of age and who were exploring music through experimenting with the piano through colours, rhythms, and pictures.  It's understandable that it can take a little while to get used to the sounds that the piano makes but that is when a smile and a positive attitude helps out.

When children are in their primary years of schooling, they are developing quickly and learning piano is a fantastic way for 'Active Learning' to play a role. I am able to teach students up to AMEB Grade 3 piano, Grade 2 Theory and ABRSM Grade 3 piano. In terms of voice, I am comfortable teaching up to Grade 7 singing.

Theory isn't always fun but it is a fantastic way to develop a deeper understanding of the score and how some chords compliment others and "sharp" symbols # aren't always called "hash". Everyone has an idea of what they would like to move towards once starting piano or singing lessons (or both) but I understand that not everyone or every parent, perhaps, moves in the same direction. It might not be necessary for you to work towards exams so there are always other achievements to be accomplished such as performing, writing music or the ability to play those songs which you've always wanted to.

Not everyone is excited about the idea of singing lessons but they are a great experience and will allow you to find your 'natural singing voice'. One of the first discoveries you will make is about breathing and how it should be no different to the way we breathe when we talk and how singing should feel just like talking.

Practice is always very important once starting lessons and I feel that it should be done on a daily basis for students aged 4 and above. 15 minutes everyday is a great start but once the music becomes more challenging aiming to practice 30 minutes is ideal.

I welcome young students and adults to my home in Ulverstone, Tasmania.
